The objective of this book is to introduce students to the various civilizations and to acquaint them with these fantastic achievements. It is also intended that students gain an appreciation for and an understanding of these and other cultures which are different from their own and that they come to understand the need to respect these differences. It is hoped that students will recognize the fact that in spite of vast differences among cultures that all peoples have certain needs that remain the same.

The self-directed activities emphasize higher-level thinking skills and the activities have been keyed to Bloom’s taxonomy for your convenience. Although not so marked, other higher level skills, such as fluency, originality, and risk-taking are also encouraged.
