More than 2,000 years ago, ancient Greek scholars named seven of the most wondrous monuments to civilization. These monuments represented spectacular architectural feats and creations of great beauty, and included the Pyramids of Egypt, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Colossus of Rhodes, Temple of Artemis, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and Pharos of Alexandria. Through the centuries these treasures were known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Because all but the Egyptian pyramids have been lost to the ravages of time, a new list of the seven wonders of the world was established in 2007. Some of these monuments are ancient and some more modern, but all are equally as grand as those on the original list of wonders. The Ancient City of Petra in Jordan, Ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, Chichen Itza in Mexico, Great Wall of China, Rome’s Colosseum, Taj Mahal in India, and Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer Statue all symbolize the creativity and ingenuity of human civilization.

Seven Wonders of the World introduces kids ages 9 and up to both the original seven wonders and the monuments on the new list. Learning about these icons of world culture offers opportunities to discover amazing civilizations, technological innovations, and our shared world heritage. Interesting sidebars, fun trivia, and entertaining illustrations break up the text, making it easily accessible and engaging, while hands-on projects encourage active learning.
