Identifying, Nurturing, and Challenging. Ages 4-9. Most schools don't formally identify children as "gifted" until third or fourth grade. By then, many kids have gone from boredom to chronic underachievement. Curriculum-specific sections for math, science, language arts, and social studies suggest ways teachers can augment their general subject activities while providing gifted students with extra challenge.
