This information-based independent learning unit may be used for group, whole-class, or individual study. It is a comprehensive study unit on birds; as such, one of its primary objectives is to introduce youngsters to basic concepts and fascinating facts about these members of the animal kingdom. Another important objective is to instill in the students as appreciation of the value of all living creatures. There is, however, a third and equally important goal of the unit: the development of crucial critical and creative thinking skills. The activities were specifically designed to encourage divergent thinking, flexibility of thought, fluent production of ideas, elaboration of details, and originality. They may be adjusted to suit your particular teaching style, time limitations, and/or the ability level of the children.
