This book enables students to explore communication through language in broad, global experiences. The A section introduces students to the cognitive and social skills required for purposeful and valuable communication. The B section provides basic everyday activities that require students to examine their past experiences and knowledge.
How To Use This Book
Some suggestions include:
• Each story reinforces some personal trait or positive behavior.
• Read the story with or to the children. Have them discuss the story by asking open-ended questions.
Challenge them to provide similar stories, events or happenings.
• Work through the activities below the stories with the entire class, workgroups or individuals. Encourage
them to express their ideas and feelings.
• If a particular behavior occurs at school, use a work unit to develop and build on this.
• Use Work Unit B to reinforce and supplement specific behavioral and environment-related topics.
The material in this book has been successfully tested by teachers. They found it a valuable resource, not only to teach basic language skills and social studies, but also as a vehicle for reinforcing positive behaviors.
