Welcome to the world of Enigmathics—an exciting resource which encourages children in grades 4 to 6 to develop a wide variety of approaches to solve mathematical problems.
What is Enigmathics?
• Enigmathics is made up of activities which challenge children’s understanding of mathematical concepts and language and which help to develop creative approaches in applying these to everyday mathematical problems.
• Enigmathics gives each child the opportunity to work effectively as a team member, to express ideas and to interact with others who are working towards the same goal.
• Enigmathics enables children to test ideas and take risks in a non-threatening environment.
• Enigmathics makes children aware that there is no one way to work through a problem. By working with others, they will find new ways to explore and express ideas.
Having enjoyed the activities in Enigmathics, children may find themselves taking up the challenge of producing their own activities either individually or in a group. It is a great experience to go through the process of producing their own “Enigmathical” problems and having classmates solve them—fun and rewarding!
• Enigmathics provides activities suitable for cooperative-group problem solving. In addition, the activities relate to the achievement objectives for the Number, Algebra, Measurement and Geometry strands with mathematical processes running through each of these.
Each section contains activities relating directly to the learning experiences for that strand as well as a few activities based on everyday math problems the children may encounter.
